Ulster County has a new designation that will allow it to receive federal assistance in the fight against drug trafficking and the heroin epidemic.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer Thursday announced that the President’s Office of National Drug Control Policy has designated Ulster County a federal High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, or HIDTA.

“So this is great news for Ulster County. I pushed hard for it,” said Schumer. “They applied the first time; they didn’t get it. They came to me. We worked with them on their application and praise God they got it.”

New York Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney held an emergency telephone town hall Thursday night to discuss the heroin epidemic and prescription drug problem in the Hudson Valley. He was joined by four speakers who offered insight into how they are addressing both the heroin and prescription drug overdose surge in the region.

“I am the heartbroken mother of a beautiful 23-year-old daughter who is a heroin addict. She started with heroin about three years ago. She never took prescription pills. She started straight with heroin.”

She wants to get her daughter some help.
