Sunday, April 14 marks the beginning of National Work Zone Safety week. WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief Lucas Willard spoke with Frank DePaola, Highway Administrator for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, who shared information about a public awareness campaign in the commonwealth, and how drivers can protect themselves and others.

The Massachusetts Highway Safety Division director has lost her job after a newspaper reported that her driving record included seven accidents, four speeding violations and one failure to wear a seat belt.

Secretary of Public Safety and Security Mary Elizabeth Heffernan tells the Boston Globe that Sheila Burgess will be assigned to a "different role" within the department. Burgess has been on medical leave since she suffered a head injury in an August crash.

Some Essex County officials are calling on the state to fix the popular scenic highway that travels up Whiteface Mountain near Lake Placid.

A member of the Essex County Board of Supervisors, Roby Politi, tells the Plattsburgh Press-Republican that the Whiteface Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway is in terrible shape and unsafe. He says thousands of people drive up the toll road to the summit of Whiteface each year but the state has paid little attention to maintenance.
