For much of 2013 and 2014 the small Berkshire County town of Hinsdale was embroiled in a struggle over its police chief, an issue that splintered the town. And there may be a new chief, but the divide remains.

In the small western Massachusetts town of Hinsdale, the Select Board Wednesday shot down the bid by ousted Police Chief Nancy Daniels’ to be hired as a part-time officer. Following the decision, the Select Board voted to adjourn the meeting after 15 minutes, as the crowd angrily voiced their disapproval.

Residents in the small western Massachusetts town of Hinsdale continue to show resentment toward the Select Board as they wait for closure in an ongoing saga over their police chief.

“When do we get to vote to get you the hell out of here?” a resident asked the Select Board at the end of the Wednesday’s meeting.

It was answered by a chorus of applause and resident Dave Kokindo as he said “Very soon.”

“And with that, I’m going to make a motion to adjourn,” said Select Chair Bonnie Connor.

The Select Board in Hinsdale, Massachusetts has hired a temporary police chief to fill the role left vacant by embattled Chief Nancy Daniels.

Wednesday’s meeting drew an even larger crowd than normal in the town of nearly 2,000, forcing the Select Board to move the gathering to the school gym next door. The rowdy crowd of more than 100 expressed its displeasure with the hiring of former Pittsfield police officer Charles Bassett by a 2 to 1 vote from the board.

Frustration continues to mount over the controversial status of the police chief and Select Board in the small western Massachusetts town of Hinsdale.

In November, the town’s Select Board placed Police Chief Nancy Daniels on paid administrative leave because she failed to complete state required training needed to serve as a full-time officer. With the support of the town’s four other police officers, Officer Rodney Maloney presented a letter to the board Wednesday saying Daniels' absence is hurting the town’s 2,000 residents.

The so-called venomous politics over a variety of topics continue in the town of 2,000, where police officers watch over the meeting room packed with people lining into the hallway each week.

In the western Massachusetts town of Hinsdale, more than 300 residents are calling for the resignation of the town’s Select Board chair.

The petition delivered by former Select Board chair David Kokindo at Wednesday’s meeting is the latest development in an escalating situation in the town of 2,000.

“The town of Hinsdale’s politics has been very venomous for a very, very long time,” said Kokindo.
