 Police chiefs meet with Speaker of the House Paul Ryan to discuss work on reducing the use of force in American policing.

Burlington, Vermont Police Chief Brandon del Pozo was in Wisconsin on Monday. He and five other police chiefs from across the U.S. met with House Speaker Paul Ryan to discuss new training guidelines issued by the Police Executive Research Forum that are aimed at reducing the use of force.   Chief del Pozo explains that the Burlington department became involved after a fatal encounter in the city last year.

The majority Democrats in the Vermont House are expected to choose their nominee for Speaker this weekend while Republicans picked their nominee on Wednesday.  The selections mean the chamber will choose its third female speaker in the body’s history.

Vermont State Representative Paul Poirier is no longer running for speaker of the House.

The Barre independent sent an email to House members on Wednesday saying he has dropped his plans to challenge Democratic incumbent Speaker Shap Smith because he says he couldn't win.

The Burlington Free Press reports that Poirier said he didn't want to waste time on a hopeless challenge and start the new session with bad feelings.

The House will elect a speaker when the legislative session opens on Jan. 9.

Defiant and emotional, Connecticut House Speaker Christopher Donovan denies that he did anything wrong as federal investigators look into his congressional campaign's finances.

Donovan held a sidewalk news conference Sunday evening outside his campaign office in Meriden.

Federal prosecutors had announced Thursday that Donovan's campaign finance manager had been arrested for allegedly conspiring with others to hide the source of $20,000 in campaign contributions.
