  The State Department of Transportation announced their ideas for improving Route17, the future I-86, which include a possible general purpose third lane or a high occupancy lane. The addition would begin at exit 120 in Middletown and end at exit 131 in the Monroe area.

Executive Diana on Liver Transplant Waitlist

Orange County Executive Edward Diana is on the waitlist for a liver transplant

Saying he “feels great,” Orange County Executive Edward Diana spent Wednesday morning telling his staff, the county legislature, and then reporters, that he is in need of a new liver.  He is on a transplant waitlist, with no clear indication when a suitable donor will be available.

Goshen, Chester Residents Sue Towns Over Irene Flooding

Seven residents of the Town of Goshen and 14 residents of the Town of Chester have filed verified complaints in State Supreme Court alleging their properties were flooded during Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee in August of last year because of their inaction.

The Goshen residents, who all live in the New Hampton area, have filed against the town, Orange County and the State Department of Environmental Conservation claiming they did not clear tree growth and other obstructions from the Wallkill River, which resulted in the flooding of their homes.

Middletown School is a Finalist in Race to the Top Competition

  The U.S. Department of Education announced on Monday that the Middletown City School District is among 61 applications selected as a finalist for the Race to the Top-District competition.

The program will provide close to $400 million to support locally developed plans to personalize and deepen student learning, directly improve student achievement and educator effectiveness, close achievement gaps, and prepare every student for success in college and careers.

Katz Calls on Democrats to Replace Sheldon Silver as Assembly Speaker

  State Assemblyman Stephen Katz (R-Yorktown) has written to his colleagues in the house urging them to replace Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver with a new leader.

Silver presides over the heavy Democrat majority in the Assembly and has come under criticism in recent months by members of both his own party and the Republicans for what Katz called his actions “in covering the sexual improprieties of Assemblyman Vito Lopez with taxpayer dollars by means of the ‘Miscellaneous Contractual Services’ account.”
