Orange County Officials Mull Over Harriman Treatment Plant's Fate

Troubles with an outdated sewage treatment plant have officials in Orange County looking for options and alternatives... Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Dave Lucas reports.

Last year, waters from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee overwhelmed the 40-year old Harriman treatment facility beyond anything seen previously, compromising its processing ability to the point where the plant was discharging more wastewater than allowable into the Ramapo River. Activists insist water quality vigilance must continue.

Statewide Bus Rally Lobbies for More School Aid

  There was a rally on Long Island, and then the bus departed for the Hudson Valley for a stop in Kingston before calling it a day in Albany.

The message was clear. New York State's schools are hurting and a lack of funding is making it difficult to educate our children.

“We are maintaining. We should be in good shape for the next couple of years,” said Maureen Bowers, a Kingston school board member, as she spoke in front the Educate NY Now Express bus that was making the run to Albany.

Arrest made in slaying of Hudson Valley woman

Authorities say an upstate New York man has been arrested in Florida for killing a 67-year-old woman whose body was found in her Hudson Valley home on Thanksgiving Day. WAMC’s Dave Lucas has more…

State police say that Justin Curran was arrested Tuesday night in Tampa, Fla., with the help of local police and U.S. Marshals.

Lt. James Murphy says Wednesday he'll be returned to New York after being charged with second-degree murder in the slaying of Laurie Ferguson.

Westchester Police Arrest Road Safety Equipment Thief

A Bronx man was arrested by Westchester County Police this week and charged with stealing close to 300 batteries from roadside Variable Message Signs that provide information and safety warnings to motorists. WAMC’s Dave Lucas has more.

Carlucci Calls for Fines Over Contractor-Caused Gridlock on Tappan Zee

Contractors performing daily repairs overnight on the Tappan Zee Bridge have apparently not finished in time for the morning commuter rush causing massive backups on the Thruway in Rockland County.

State Senator David Carlucci (D-Nanuet) said Tuesday that $1,000 per minute contractor fines should be increased to $10,000 for every minute they break the morning work stop deadline.

Legislators Criticize Albany For Unfunded Mandates

  Westchester County legislators blasted elected officials in Albany for their continued imposition of mandates without financial relief. Hand in hand with that is the state imposed two percent tax cap.

Legislator Michael Kaplowitz (D-4) said Albany is “a mess.”

Fellow Democrat lawmaker William Ryan (D-5) was highly critical of state legislators.

Westchester Legislators Restore 126 Jobs for 2013 Budget

  A total of 126 Westchester County employees who were slated to be laid off in County Executive Robert Astorino’s proposed $1.7 billion, 2013 budget will be saved.

The Budget and Appropriations Committee of the Board of Legislators voted on Monday to restore the jobs with money from the county’s fund balance. Legislature Chairman Kenneth Jenkins said there will be no borrowing to retain the positions.

NY court OKs $1M school racial harassment award

An appeals court says a Dutchess County school district must pay $1 million to a man who was racially harassed for 3½ years in high school. WAMC’s Dave Lucas has more…The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday upheld the award for Anthony Zeno. He faced repeated harassment in the Pine Plains Central School District from 2005 to 2008.  The 2nd Circuit said he faced racist, demeaning, threatening and violent conduct.
