Dutchess County Finances Improving, Slightly

POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess County government’s financial picture is better than last year’s, but not as good as it was prior to the recession in 2007. That word came Thursday from county Budget Director Valerie Sommerville, who briefed the Budget and Finance Committee of the county legislature.

Sommerville told lawmakers the expected economic recovery has not been as rapid as anticipated.

Hudson Valley Assemblyman Wants START-UP NY Repealed

A New York state Assemblyman says he will introduce legislation next week to repeal Governor Andrew Cuomo’s START-UP New York program that gives tax-free incentives to new businesses.

A recent report from Governor Cuomo’s Division of Budget fueled Republican Assemblyman Kieran Lalor’s mission. He says had had not planned to draft repeal legislation until seeing the numbers.

U.S. Attorney, EPA Sue Westchester Over Safe Drinking Water Act

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Attorney are suing Westchester County for alleged violations of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act.

The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and the EPA filed the civil lawsuit against Westchester, alleging that the county’s Water District Number 1 fails to fully treat a significant portion of its water for the parasite cryptosporidium. Ned McCormack is a spokesman for County Executive Rob Astorino.

U.S. House Speaker Meets Protests Outside Congressional Fundraiser In Sullivan County

U.S. House Speaker John Boehner headlined a fundraiser for New York Congressman Chris Gibson Tuesday evening. The Sullivan County event drew about 75 protestors, who gathered to tell the two Republicans that their votes are hurting working families.

Beacon’s First Paid Fire Chief Is On The Job

BEACON – The City of Beacon has hired its first full-time paid fire chief and Gary Van Voohis started on the job on Monday.

The Fishkill native who spent much of his career in Illinois, most recently as an assistant fire chief, will be in charge of the 30-plus volunteer firefighters and 13 paid firefighters in Beacon.

Mayor Randy Casale has set the new chief’s agenda for him already.

Large Group Protests Gibson Fundraiser

LIBERTY – House Speaker John Boehner was the featured speaker at a private fundraiser for Congressman Christopher Gibson (R, NY19) Tuesday evening in Liberty. The event was closed to the media.

Close to 100 people gathered outside to show support for Obamacare, comprehensive immigration reform and to protest for an end to sequestration.

Citizen Action of New York regional coordinator Kat Fisher had a message for those assembled.
