KINGSTON – As the clock keeps ticking, the likelihood of the governor calling a special session of the legislature diminishes and that means any hope of passing legislation to allow Ulster County to keep its sales tax at its current level fades.
Assemblyman Kevin Cahill said if it does not make it before lawmakers this fall, it will come up early next year. But, county officials say they need the one percent sales tax exemption ASAP or the county will lose about $5 million in revenue.
POUGHKEEPSIE – Democrat current and past staff of the Dutchess County Board of Elections have charged that the 46 felony count indictment against Democrat Elections Commissioner Frances Knapp was “politically orchestrated” by the Republican Party.
A state senator and assemblyman, both from the Hudson Valley, say they have a bipartisan solution to curb unfunded mandates. They also say they are banding together as outsiders and want their constituents to know about it.
About three months ago, Democratic state Senator Terry Gipson proposed a state constitutional amendment to prohibit certain unfunded mandates. He says the measure is a bold one.
He says making the case for his bill is stronger, now that he has found a partner in the Assembly – Republican Kieran Lalor.
The investigation continues into a fatal boat crash in the Hudson River on Friday. The families of the victims say the investigation should focus on lighting, not alcohol. But state authorities say lighting was in compliance. In the meantime, family members went from planning a wedding to holding funerals.
With the indictment of the Dutchess County Democratic elections commissioner and a former Republican elections commissioner on misconduct and other alleged violations of election law, the job of ensuring voting integrity begins.
KINGSTON – Republican Ulster County Legislator Kevin Roberts, who represents the Town of Plattekill, looks like he may have clear sailing in the November election.
Roberts, who will also appear on the Independence Party line, had a challenge from Democrat Miguel Garcia, who sought an opportunity to ballot to appear on that line. The State Supreme Court in Kingston on Tuesday ruled the request invalid.
The court also tossed Garcia’s Democratic Party petitions because of irregularities, said Roberts.
POUGHKEEPSIE – Democratic Dutchess County Elections Commissioner Frances Knapp and former Republican Commissioner David Gamache were both indicted by a Dutchess County grand jury, following a lengthy investigation into Board of Elections irregularities.
Both were in county court for their arraignments as the indictments were unsealed.
