After being charged with bribery in a real-estate development scheme as part of a larger political corruption case in New York, it is still unclear whether the mayor of Rockland County’s Spring Valley will remain in office.

Village of Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin and Deputy Mayor Joseph Desmaret face bribery and mail fraud charges in connection with a federal corruption case stretching from New York City to Spring Valley to Albany. NY Corruption Case Reaches to a Rockland County Village

New York State Senator Malcolm Smith and New York City Councilman Dan Halloran were arrested today in an alleged plot to rig the New York City mayor's race. U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara says in a statement that Smith "tried to bribe his way" into a shot at the New York City mayoral race. Bharara says Smith "drew up the game plan" and Halloran found party chairmen who were open to receiving bribes. The arrests included four others, including two from the Hudson Valley’s Rockland County.

Another municipality outlaws disposable plastic bags

MAMARONECK – Effective Monday, disposable plastic bags will not be available at check-out counters in the Village of Mamaroneck. That municipality joins the City of Rye and Larchmont, all in Westchester County, in banning those bags.  The Towns of Mamaroneck and the Village of Tuckahoe are next to consider outlawing them.

The Citizens Campaign for the Environment lauds the efforts, said Jordan Christensen, the Hudson Valley program coordinator for the organization, who said Long Island communities are also enacting similar legislation.

North Rockland girl dies from bacterial meningitis

POMONA – The Rockland County Department of Health announced on Monday an investigation into the death from Meningitis of a 12-year-old Rockland girl who attended St. Gregory’s School. Officials explained preventative measures and means to reach out to those who might have been exposed.

“I want to stress that we are responding, and we are responding quickly and appropriately,” Rockland Commissioner of Health Kathy Henry said.
