It takes guts to be a comedian, and it takes smarts to make a living off it. In Funny on Purpose: The Definitive Guide to an Unpredictable Career in Comedy: Standup + Improv + Sketch + TV + Writing + Directing + YouTube, former Onion editor Joe Randazzo delivers a funny and insightful blueprint for those looking to turn their sense of humor into a vocation.

During the course of living (mumble, mumble) years, Dave Barry has learned much of wisdom,* (*actual wisdom not guaranteed) and he is eager to pass it on—to the next generation, the generation after that, and to those idiots who make driving to the grocery store in Florida a death-defying experience.

His new book of "life lessons" is Live Right and Find Happiness (Although Beer is Much Faster): Life Lessons and Other Ravings from Dave Barry.

Barry is the co-author (with Ridley Pearson) of the Peter and the Starcatchers series. The National Tour of the Broadway Play (winner of 5 Tony Awards), Peter and the Starcatcher, will be at Proctors in Schenectady, NY on March 21st.

Dear Wally…

Ask Wally Nichols what he does for a living and he may say: Musician, Writer, Radio DJ, Cartoonist or Farmer. Today he is answering author, because of his new book: Dear Wally: A Collection of Snarky Advice Columns & Opinionated Essays – pieces from The Blue Stone Press.

Wally Nichols is an advice columnist the regional upstate paper. It's not exactly advice though- at least not in the 'Dear Abbey' sense. This is up on a soap box/ bully pulpit material that is sometimes salty, sometimes very funny, sometimes clever, sometimes humble, sometimes appreciative, sometimes observant. The book is a collection of the best fifty over a three-year span.

Can we accurate codify why things make us laugh?

Dr. Peter McGraw of the University of Colorado Boulder draws on his work with Caleb Warren and The Humor Research Lab (HuRL) to answer the question, “What makes things humorous?”

For years, P.J. O’Rourke has trained his wit and critical eye on institutions ranging from the U.S. Government and the global economy to the automobile industry and American politics.

In his new book, The Baby Boom: How it Got That Way – And it Wasn’t My Fault…And I’ll Never Do it Again, he trains his eye on his own generation. He leads readers on an expedition into the world of the boomer psyche.

He has written 16-books, including the bestsellers, Parliament of Whores and Give War a Chance
