U.S. Sen. Warren: Allow Immigration Vote in House

BOSTON (AP) — U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren is urging House Republican leaders to allow a vote on a sweeping immigration bill passed overwhelmingly in the Senate earlier this year.

The Massachusetts Democrat said the bill would likely pass in the House, with the support of Democrats and some Republicans, and be signed by President Barack Obama.

But many Republicans in the House reject the Senate plan to provide a path to citizenship for the 11 million immigrants living here illegally and tighten border security.

Push For Immigration Reform

The National Dream Act Coalition is demanding action from Congress and President Barack Obama to stop the foot-dragging on comprehensive immigration reform. The tone of the 11th-hour effort was set by Tuesday's appearance of President Obama on Telemundo.

More than 1,000 people are deported everyday under the Obama administration. Obama told Telemundo that he does not have authority to halt deportations, but advocates should not give up on reform.

US Ag Sec Argues For Commonsense Immigration Reform For NY Economy

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says there are many economic benefits of common-sense immigration reform for New York.

Vilsack, who hosted a media conference call Wednesday, says the numbers are a cause for national concern. Maureen Torrey, former chair of the USDA Fruit and Vegetable Industry Advisory Committee, is an 11th generation farmer in western New York.

Teach-In, Speak-Out on Citzenship: Public Forum On Immigration Reform

A public forum on immigration reform is taking place this evening in Hudson.

Immigration reform advocates want Washington to make sure that millions of families are no longer separated by what they see as unjust policies, that due process is upheld, and that protections are strengthened for all workers.

Democratic Congressman Bill Owens represents New York’s 21st district in the North Country. On WAMC’s Congressional Corner program, Owens said progress on immigration reform looks to be a slow-go.

Immigration Bill Supporters Rally Outside NY Congressman's District Office

Supporters of the comprehensive immigration bill recently passed in the U.S. Senate stood outside the district office of a New York Congressman Monday, urging him to follow suit in the House.

About two dozen supporters stood outside Republican Congressman Chris Gibson’s Kingston district office, pressing him to listen to their voices and join in the fight to enact comprehensive immigration reform. Gibson was elsewhere in his district at the time.
