Sheehan Takes Oath: 'A New Era' Begins

Kathy Sheehan has taken the reins as the first female Albany mayor in more than three centuries of city history.

Breaking from city tradition in more ways than one, former city treasurer Kathy Sheehan was officially sworn in New Year's Day at Kiernan Plaza in downtown Albany. Fellow Democrat New York Lt. Governor Bob Duffy gave the keynote address, hailing the day as the start of "Mayor Sheehan's era."

Albany Bids Jennings Farewell

A formal ceremony was held today in downtown Albany to bid farewell to the man who has led the capital city for two decades.

Citizens, politicians, police and public service workers gathered in and around Albany city hall to say goodbye to Jerry Jennings - the colorful, outgoing Mayor who shepherded the capital city for the past twenty years.

Albany City Budget Plan Unveiled

All eyes are on Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings as he takes the wraps off the proposed city budget for 2014.

Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings today released his 2014 proposed budget presentation.

Jennings, who is nearing the end of his 20-year term, unveiled a $171 million spending plan that reflects a 2-point-4 million dollar reduction in operating expenses from last year's adopted budget: the Democrat says 87 percent of the proposed budget, exclusive of debt service, is related to personnel costs.

Jennings says the city has been moving forward, despite what he terms "great challenges." The budget plan calls for an increase of 900 thousand dollars to the tax levy.

Schumer Makes Case For Boosting Rail Safety

Longtime rail safety advocate U.S. Senator Charles Schumer was in Albany Monday to express his concern for New Yorkers who live and work in communities along rail freight lines.  With the accident in Quebec that killed 47 people still fresh, Schumer is pushing for new regulations governing tanker car safety.

The Democrat and state’s senior Senator notes oil and ethanol have been transported by train for years, but with increased supplies, oil companies find it more profitable to ship hazardous petroleum products by train.

With Jennings Out, Corey Ellis Takes Another Run At Albany Mayor

Twenty-four hours after Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings made public his letter stating that he will not run for another term after 20 years in office, the Albany County Democratic Committee gave its nomination to City Treasurer Kathy Sheehan in the race for mayor. The committee passed over former City Council member Corey Ellis, who ran against Mayor Jennings four years ago fir the Democratic nomination.

Wednesday on Midday Magazine, we heard from Sheehan. Today, we speak with Corey Ellis, who says the lack of the party's nomination will not affect his campaign.

Sheehan Clinches Democratic Mayoral Endorsement

The race to replace Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings is stirring controversy in the city of Albany, New York. At a meeting Wednesday night, the Albany County Democratic Committee endorsed current City Treasurer Kathy Sheehan for mayor.

Sheehan said that she was honored to be the party’s nominee and thanked the committee and the community for their support.

However, Sheehan’s endorsement was not met with unanimous approval and prompted some verbal sparring at the meeting.

Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings has formally announced he will not run for a sixth term in office, ending a political career spanning more than three decades.

There was no shortage of applause, glad-handing, and backslapping at Albany City Hall Wednesday morning as Mayor Jerry Jennings, a Democrat, publicly announced what he had previously revealed in an open letter sent to members of the press and city officials Tuesday night announcing his intention not to seek reelection.
