NY Jobs: Composite Outlook Is Good

New Census estimates show the number of New Yorkers living in poverty remained steady from 2012 through last year, mirroring national statistics. The data comes at a time when the Empire State is gearing up to increase benefits for the unemployed and boost  employment opportunities for disabled workers.

The U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday proclaimed median household income throughout New York State remained flat at about $57,000.

Fall Jobs Outlook Bright For Albany Area

Although U.S. businesses added fewer jobs than expected in August,  one expert says the fall jobs outlook for the Albany area is promising.

Reflecting the August lull in the national market, Capital Region weekly job postings were 1821 compared to 2480 the week before. NextAct of Colonie's Dan Moran believes the market is about to get more competitive

OccupyAlbany Sponsors Jobs Forum

When does an activist group hold a jobs forum? When it believes the local community is threatened by casino expansion.  Operating under the premise that commercial gambling and casino culture are not the answer to the need for local economic development, OccupyAlbany is sponsoring a jobs forum to explore local job creation. Activist Jonathan Capra:  "The purpose of this forum is to get the community together and brainstorm about what we can do together to build new forms of economy, whether it be worker cooperatives or other ideas like that. I'd say the agenda right now is pretty open."

Kaprielian: Massachusetts Job Growth Best Since 2000

Revised numbers out today show Massachusetts added 55,200 jobs last year, almost all of them in the private sector. State officials say it is the largest number of new jobs in a December-to-December period since 2000. The Massachusetts unemployment rate dropped to 6.8 percent in January. The Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development, Rachel Kaprielian, said the job gains were varied.

Telephone Town Hall On Economic Development

A Congressman and an economic development chief talked jobs, listened to ideas and exchanged information with New Yorkers on a conference call this afternoon.

Capital District Democratic Congressman Paul Tonko and President, CEO & Commissioner of Empire State Development Kenneth Adams hosted the hour-long "telephone town hall" with citizens, fielding questions and chatting about highlight federal and state efforts at economic development and job creation.

Job Market Slightly Better Past Seven Days

The newest job market numbers are out, and they’re trending in a positive direction.   The job market in the Capital Region paralleled the national one as it rebounded a bit after an off week. Next-Act of Colonie's Dan Moran sees the numbers reflecting continued strength and employer confidence.    “ We had a couple of good weeks of run-up. We had kind of a flat week, now we're coming back up a little higher again. It's showing a new confidence in the employment market, and that's a good thing.”

Unemployment Stats: Read Between The Lines

The state Labor Department says New York’s unemployment rate decreased from 7.4 percent to 7.1 percent in December, its lowest level since January 2009. Numbers for the Capital Region tell a slightly different story...

The unemployment rate in the Capital Region fell to a low of 5.4 percent in December. That's lowest number for the 12th month of the year since 2007 - but the number of workers making up the labor force stands at about 437,000, the lowest December figure since 2000.
