Mass. GOP U.S. Senate Candidates Working Against the Clock to Secure a Ballot Spot

Massachusetts State Rep. and candidate for U.S. Senate Daniel Winslow.

Following last weekend’s massive snowstorm that buried most of eastern Massachusetts from Boston to Worcester in as much as three feet of snow, there was a blizzard of activity this week by Republican hopefuls in the race to replace former Massachusetts U.S. Senator John Kerry.


WAMC’s Patrick Donges checked in with the Boston Globe’s Massachusetts State House bureau chief Frank Phillips for an update on the climatic challenges, both political and meteorological, that Republicans must overcome for a shot at the seat.

GOP Rep. Winslow enters race for Mass. Senate

BOSTON (AP) — Republican State Rep. Daniel Winslow has officially entered the race for the U.S. Senate.

Winslow said in letter to supporters and GOP activists on Thursday that he would be a candidate in the special election to fill the seat formerly held by Secretary of State John Kerry.

GOP ex-MA Lt. Gov. Healey opts out of US Senate race

BOSTON (AP) — Former Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey has joined a growing list of Republicans who've ruled out running in a special election to fill the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the departure of former Sen. John Kerry.

Healey said Monday she was grateful for the advice of those who urged her to get into the race but said she's decided against it.

Brown Won't Run in Special Election

BOSTON (AP) — Former Republican Sen. Scott Brown won't be running in a Massachusetts special election to fill Democrat John Kerry's seat.

A person familiar with the decision who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to discuss it says Brown will not run.

Brown was defeated in November by Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren. He had won the seat in a special election in 2010.
