Democrat Clark Wins Mass. Congressional Race

Democrat Katherine Clark has defeated three opponents to win a special election to fill a vacant Massachusetts congressional seat.

The state senator from Melrose will be only the fifth woman to represent Massachusetts in the U.S. House.

After winning a crowded Democratic primary, Clark ran a low-key general election campaign, agreeing to a single debate against Republican Boston attorney Frank Addivinola.

The other two candidates were Wellesley resident James Aulenti Arlington resident James Hall.

Clark Wins Dems Mass. 5th District Primary

Democrat Katherine Clark and Republican Frank Addivinola have captured their respective party's nominations in the special election primary for Massachusetts' 5th Congressional District.

Clark, a state senator from Melrose, will face off against Addivinola, a Boston attorney, in the Dec. 10 special election to fill the U.S. House seat left vacant by Edward Markey's election to the Senate.

Seven Democrats and three Republicans had battled for the chance to represent the district that includes communities north and west of Boston.

Voters Head To Polls In Mass. 5th District Primary

Voters in Massachusetts' 5th Congressional District are heading to the polls to winnow down a field of seven Democrats and three Republicans in the state's latest special election primary.

Massachusetts Secretary William Galvin is predicting a strong voter turnout. Galvin said 100,000 to 120,000 Democrats and up to 20,000 Republicans could cast ballots Tuesday.

Markey Win Sets Up Special Election For House

The election of Edward Markey to the U.S. Senate sets the stage for yet another special election in Massachusetts, this one to fill the U.S. House seat that Markey has held for more than 36 years.

Several Democrats had already expressed interest in running for the 5th congressional district seat if Markey won the special Senate election. They include Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian, state Sens. Katherine Clark, Karen Spilka and William Brownsberger, and state Rep. Carl Sciortino.
