Jeffrey Eugenides At Vassar College 10/28

  

  Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Jeffrey Eugenides (The Virgin Suicides, Middlesex, The Marriage Plot) has been called a “great American writer” (Los Angeles Times Book Review) and “a master of voice” (Washington Post).

Eugenides will deliver the annual William Gifford Lecture at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY on Tuesday, October 28, at 6 pm in the Villard Room of Main Building. Sponsored by the English Department and the William Gifford Fund for Writers-in-Residence, this lecture is free and open to the public.

Jonathan Franzen At Skidmore College

    Critically acclaimed novelist Jonathan Franzen will deliver this fall’s Frances Steloff Lecture at Skidmore at 8 p.m. tonight.

The reading and discussion, titled “Jonathan Franzen: The Novel and the World,” will be in Gannett Auditorium of Palamountain Hall.

The program will include the awarding of an honorary doctorate to Franzen; a book signing by the author will follow the formal program. Franzen’s books will be available for sale.

2nd Annual Michael and Kitty Dukakis Public Policy Lecture at MCLA - Senator George J. Mitchell

George Mitchell was appointed to the United States Senate in 1980 to complete the unexpired term of Senator Edmund Muskie, who resigned to become Secretary of State. He was elected to a full term in the Senate in 1982 in a stunning come-from-behind victory. Mitchell went on to an illustrious career in the Senate spanning 14 years.

In 1988, he was reelected with 81 percent of the vote, the largest margin in Maine history. He left the Senate in 1995 as the Senate Majority Leader; a position he had held since January 1989.
