Pittsfield's Push For Revised City Charter Gets First Green Light From Lawmakers

At a recent legislative hearing, Pittsfield’s plan for a new city charter was given a favorable recommendation by a group of Massachusetts lawmakers.

Among those who testified to the state legislature’s Joint Committee on Municipalities and Regional Government Tuesday in support of a bill that would allow Pittsfield to pursue a new city charter were State Senator Benjamin Downing, State Representative Tricia Farley-Bouvier, State Representative Paul Mark, and Pittsfield Mayor Dan Bianchi.

Cynthia Lowe - Chairwoman, Ulster County Charter Revision Commission

Whenever a government charter is revised, elected officials pay close attention to determine how they could be affected by the changes. That seems to be the case in Ulster County, New York, where the charter revision commission has finished its work, and now it’s time for public hearings and a vote. One commission member issued a warning to the county legislature saying the charter revisions should not fall prey to political whims, but the chair of the revision commission, Cynthia Lowe, says that was just one persons opinion. She spoke with WAMC’s Brian Shields.

NY, Local Governments Butt Heads over Next Crisis

The next government fiscal crisis is boiling over in counties and municipalities, and taxpayers again are catching the heat.  WAMC’s Tristan O’Neill reports…

New York's state Legislature chose not pass the urgent pleas of local governments including Rockland County, the City of Long Beach, Suffolk and Nassau counties, Buffalo and Newburgh during the 2012 legislative session that ended last week.

The local governments sought permission to spread debt payments or increase local sales taxes, among other measures.
