            Weekday commuters on the Massachusetts Turnpike saw big changes today, but not the big traffic jams some feared might occur.  This was the first work day of all-electronic open-road tolling statewide.

      In advance of the changeover in late October to all-electronic tolling on the Massachusetts Turnpike, officials are distributing free transponders that motorists will need to avoid paying higher rates to travel on the highway.

In 2013, Massachusetts saw a 3-cent tax hike on gas and the reinstatement of tolls on the westernmost portion of the Mass Pike. Democrat Smitty Pignatelli represents the 4th Berkshire District. He says he understands the state’s need to raise revenue to fund its $500 million transportation finance package, but is hoping for some relief for his travel-dependent constituents.
