Many Seek Clarification of Mass. Medical Marijuana Law as Listening Tour Begins

Public hearings on the future regulation of medical marijuana in Massachusetts will be held this month, but as a deadline approaches, some are concerned that the state’s final regulations may come later than expected.

Beginning Wednesday evening, state officials from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health will hold a series of public listening sessions before the implementation of medical marijuana regulations.

Mass. Gov. Proposes New Laws on Gun Ownership

The Governor of Massachusetts has filed new legislation that would introduce stricter regulations on gun ownership. The bill includes strict background checks and closing licensing loopholes. WAMC’s Berkshire Bureau Chief Lucas Willard reports…

Governor Patrick announced the legislation just over a month after the shooting deaths of children and educators in the massacre in Newtown, Conn, and only one day after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the SAFE Act, putting tighter restrictions on gun ownership in the Empire State.

Chief of Mass. Crime Lab Chosen to Lead Conn. Lab

The director of the state crime lab in Massachusetts has been tapped to lead the troubled crime lab in Connecticut.

The appointment of Guy Vallaro as director of the Connecticut’s Forensic Science Laboratory was announced Monday.

The Connecticut lab has struggled with a huge case backload and other problems identified in U.S. Justice Department audits. It won back its professional accreditation earlier this year.

Massachusetts Tax Collections Below Benchmarks

Massachusetts tax collections in October were $48 million below the same month a year ago, and missed official benchmarks for the fourth consecutive month in this fiscal year. 

State Revenue Commissioner Amy Pitter said Monday that Massachusetts appears to be seeing a slowdown in the pace of recovery from the recession.

The state collected slightly above $1.4 billion in taxes last month, down 3.3 percent from October 2011.
