The Massachusetts Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education, Mitchell Chester, is in Holyoke today.  It is his first visit since a state education board voted earlier this week to put the city’s public schools under state control.

Massachusetts education officials have dropped a proposal to include classroom performance evaluations as a criteria for renewing the licenses for teachers, administrators and other educators. The move came just days after newly released data gave most educators in the state high marks.


A top official with the U.S. Department of Agriculture visited a western Massachusetts school today to highlight a growing initiative that is giving more than half-a-million children across the county access to locally grown food.

On the lunch menu Wednesday at the John F. Kennedy Middle School in Northampton was chili with brown rice, or a chicken patty on a whole wheat roll.   At the end of the cafeteria line children could help themselves to corn, green beans and sliced oranges.
