Oct 16, 2013

In baseball, one run was enough for the Red Sox to take a two-games-to-one lead in the American League Championship Series. John Lackey combined with three relievers on a six-hitter as Boston blanked the Tigers 1-0 in Detroit. Mike Napoli homered off losing pitcher Justin Verlander in the top of the seventh.

Meanwhile in the National League Championship Series, St. Louis got within one victory of another World Series appearance. Matt Holliday went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer as the Cards beat the Dodgers 4-2 to take a three-games-to-one lead in the series.

In baseball, Toronto blanked the Yankees 2-0. The Blue Jays dealt the Yanks their fourth straight loss and dropped them 3 ½ games behind in the wild-card race.

Elsewhere, Baltimore beat Boston 3-2 last night. That left the Red Sox's magic number at three for winning the AL East.

Texas passed Tampa Bay 7-1. The Texas Rangers put a halt to their seven-game losing streak while moving back into a tie with Tampa Bay for the two American League wild-card berths.
