In July 2014, the prison atop Mount McGregor in Saratoga County closed after nearly four decades in operation. Now, the state of New York is looking to sell the property. WAMC’s Southern Adirondack Bureau Chief Lucas Willard reports a request for proposals expires at the end of the month.

Atop Saratoga County's Mt. McGregor, in the foothills of the Adirondacks, is the yellow house known as Grant's Cottage. The building is where former U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant spent the last six weeks of his life.

Sitting next to a complex that was most recently used as a prison, but was once mountain top resort, the building is now owned by the State of New York. A staff of volunteers runs tours and programs at the site.

Big changes are planned for the site of a recently closed prison in Saratoga County.

Mount McGregor prison in Wilton was closed last July as part of an initiative by Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office to right-size New York’s correctional system.

While the executive branch has hailed the savings associated with the closures, due in part to a decrease in inmate populations, local leaders protested the closure of Mount McGregor for months, saying the loss of prison jobs would be a blow to the area.
