Mets Rally Past Yankees 2-1, Rivera Stunned in Ninth

Well, it was another night of interleague play in the major leagues.

In the subway series, both David Wright and Lucas Duda hit RBI singles off Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning, and the Mets rallied past the Yankees 2-1 on Tuesday night to beat baseball's career saves leader. This happened only hours after honoring him at his final Citi Field game. Earlier, the Mets played a video tribute to Rivera that read, "Congratulations on a Hall of Fame career."

In baseball news, checking the American League, Tampa Bay won 8-3 over the Yankees on Sunday. Elsewhere the Red Sox edged ahead of Cleveland 6-5.Toronto beat Baltimore 6-5. Detroit defeated Minnesota 6-1. The Angels passed Kansas City 5-2. Oakland beat Houston 6-2 and Seattle won against Texas 4-3. That game lasted 13 innings.

In baseball news, checking the American League, Clay Buchholz improved to his seventh win without a loss and Boston beat the White Sox 6-2.  Elsewhere, Baltimore doubled up the Yankees 6-3. Oakland fell to Texas 3-1. Toronto defeated Tampa Bay 4-3 in a game that lasted 10 innings. The Angels slid past Seattle 7-1 and Houston edged ahead of Kansas City 3-1.

WAMC Morning Edition Sports Update

In the NBA playoffs, on Saturday the Pacers knocked out the Knicks 106-99 in Game 6 sending them to face Miami for their first Eastern Conference final since 2004. On Sunday, the Spurs took Game 1 of the NBA's Western Conference finals defeating the Grizzlies 105-83. Tony Parker finished with 20 points and nine assists.

In the NHL playoffs, the Bruins scored two goals in the third to beat the New York Rangers 5-2 and take a 2-0 lead in the series. The Rangers host the next two games Tuesday and Thursday. The Ottawa Senators won against Pittsburgh 2-1 in double-overtime.

WAMC Morning Edition Sports Update

In the NBA playoffs, Carmelo Anthony scored 28 points to help the Knicks stay alive in the Eastern Conference semifinals with an 85-75 victory over Indiana in Game 5 on Thursday night.

Reserves J.R. Smith and Chris Copeland each had 13 points for the Knicks, who trail 3-2 and will need a victory Saturday in Indiana to force a seventh game on Monday.

Elsewhere, the Spurs moved into the NBA's Western Conference finals after downing the Warriors 94-82 in Game 6. Stephen Curry finished with a team-high 22 points.

In major league baseball, checking the American League, Stephen Drew hit his second career grand slam and the Red Sox beat the Rays 9-2. Jon Lester stayed unbeaten, allowing two runs in seven innings to help end the Rays' season-best six-game winning streak. Elsewhere, Raul Ibanez hit a grand slam and two-run homer at Yankee Stadium to help Seattle rout New York 12-2. Houston defeated Detroit 7-5. The White Sox won against Minnesota 9-4. Texas beat Oakland 6-2 and Kansas City passed the Angels 9-5.

WAMC Morning Edition Sports Update

In the NBA playoffs, the Pacers have taken a 3-1 series lead on the Knicks after a 93-82 victory last night. Indiana needs one more win to reach the conference finals for the first time since 2004. Elsewhere, Tony Parker scored 25 points in leading the Spurs to a 109-91 win over Golden State and a 3-2 lead in their playoff series.

Checking NHL playoff action, Tomas Vokoun stopped 35 shots helping Pittsburgh defeat Ottawa 4-1. Game 2 is Friday in Pittsburgh. Also, Los Angeles shut out San Jose 2-0.

WAMC Morning Edition Sports Update

In the NHL playoffs, it will be the Bruins against the Rangers in the Eastern Conference semifinals. History was made in the game between Boston and Toronto. The Bruins trailed by three goals in the third period before beating Toronto 5-4 in overtime. That is the first time that has ever happened. Patrice Bergeron provided the tying and series-winning goals to cap the Bruins' tremendous Game 7 comeback. Elsewhere, the Rangers also won their Game 7 with 5-0 win over the Capitals in Washington.

In the NHL playoffs, Tomas Vokoun stopped 31 shots in his first playoff start in six years and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the New York Islanders 4-0 on Thursday night in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series. The Penguins lead the series 3-2. Game 6 is Saturday in New York. Elsewhere it was Ottawa over Montreal 6-1 and Chicago beat Minnesota 5-1. Tonight the New York Rangers take on the Capitals in Game 5. The series is tied at two games apiece.

WAMC Morning Edition Sports Update

In the NBA playoffs, the Knicks beat the Pacers 105-79 Tuesday night to even the Eastern Conference semifinals at one game. Carmelo Anthony scored 32 points. Iman Shumpert added 15 points, including a sensational follow dunk in the first half. Game 3 is Saturday at Indianapolis. Elsewhere, the Grizzlies earned a 99-93 win at Oklahoma City. Thunder forward Kevin Durant  contributed 36 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.

In other NBA news, Phil Jackson has informed the Brooklyn Nets he will not be their new coach.
