WAMC Sports Report: UAlbany Takes First Round, Headed To Orlando

Dayton Ohio was the historic scene for UAlbany’s first ever Division I NCAA victory. The 71-64 win over Mount Saint Mary’s will send them to Orlando to see No. 1 Florida in the second round of the tournament on Thursday at 4:10PM on TBS. North Carolina State also saw a 74-59 win last night over Xavier.

WAMC Morning Edition Sports Update

In the NCAA men’s basketball tournament there are 12 teams left.

Syracuse limited Indiana to its lowest point total of the season, forced 19 turnovers, compiled 10 blocks and held the normally efficient Hoosiers to 33 percent shooting.

Marquette built a double-digit lead in the first half and went on to a 71-61 win over Miami to earn a spot in the East Regional title game.

Keith Strudler: On Rooting for the Bad Guy

There was an entertaining documentary on ESPN recently about North Carolina State’s unlikely run to an NCAA men’s basketball championship in 1983 where they beat an otherwise unbeatable University of Houston team in the finals. NC State was the ultimate underdog, winning games in the final moments against much deeper competition. And particularly since their coach Jim Valvano’s passing from cancer several years ago, this Wolfpack team has been memorialized as perhaps the most cherished championship team in college basketball history.

WAMC Morning Edition Sports Update

Saint Mary's and North Carolina A&T are the first two winners in the NCAA men's basketball tournament. Saint Mary's moved into the second round with a 67-54 win over Middle Tennessee.

North Carolina A&T won against Liberty 73-72 and tonight LIU Brooklyn takes on James Madison in Dayton, Ohio.

In the NBA, Indiana defeated Orlando 95-73. Denver slid past Oklahoma City 114-104. Milwaukee beat Portland 102-95 and Sacramento won against the Clippers 116-101. Jimmer Fredette scored three points.
