Albany, NY – Police using dogs that are trained to sniff-out guns, drugs and explosives have searched Schenectady High School several times since the school year began in September. School officials and police say the searches are for the safety of students, faculty and staff in a city with a recent history of violent crime. WAMC's Brian Shields reports.

Syracuse, NY – New York Governor George Pataki has signed into law a forestry measure that addresses timber theft and sustainable forestry. The measure also establishes a ""Right to Practice Forestry" initiative to ensure that legitimate and sustainable forestry activities are not unduly restricted or banned by local ordinances. Greenport, NY – Hearings on noise impacts from the proposed St. Lawrence Cement plant in Columbia County are a few weeks away, and the Department of Environmental Conservation has requested additional information from the cement company on the topic. Hyde Park, NY – The voting on new zoning ordinances in a Dutchess County town ended in a tie after one council member was banned from casting his vote.
