New York State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia was in Plattsburgh Thursday to hold a public hearing on the state’s draft regulations to meet the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, which replaces No Child Left Behind.

The New York state Education Commissioner Monday announced the appointment of a monitor for the troubled East Ramapo School District in Rockland County. Tuesday, they held a series of meetings in Rockland in what participants describe as a positive and encouraging step forward.

An attorney representing a newly-formed coalition of yeshivas has complained to the New York state Education Department about the Rockland County Executive’s approach to fire safety inspections at private schools. The county executive makes no apologies, saying safety is his number one concern.

A new campaign to increase the quality and quantity of teachers in New York was announced on Wednesday by SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher and State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia. The initiative was launched to help encourage college enrollment in teaching professions.

A petition to overturn results of the troubled February 9th high school vote in Albany has been denied.

Citing what he calls a “flawed” referendum process, Albany County Comptroller Mike Conners has followed through with a threat to petition the state education commissioner to throw out the results of this month's Albany High School renovation re-vote and order the county Board of Elections to conduct a new election.

The New York state education commissioner visited the troubled East Ramapo School District in Rockland County earlier this week. Commissioner MaryEllen Elia says she spent Wednesday alongside the interim superintendent and school board chair.

“And I went into multiple classrooms, talks to a number of teachers,” says Elia. “And we still have issues in East Ramapo and the state Ed Department is committed to addressing those issues. And I think we need to work out how we can do that and support the students of that area.”
