When it comes to endorsements in last week's primaries, Gov. Andrew Cuomo is five for five.
All three of the Senate Democrats endorsed by the governor - via press release - in the week before the elections and both Assembly Democrats were successful at weathering challenges from fellow party members.
The three senators, Adriano Espaillat, Toby Ann Stavisky and Neil Breslin, won by wide margins.
Ditto for Assemblymen David Gantt and Sean Ryan.
Arguably, Cuomo didn't really have all that much on the line in these races.
The candidates in an often contentious campaign for the Democratic primary in New York’s 44th State Senate District met in a debate last evening at Russell Sage College in Troy. The campaign between incumbent Neil Breslin and challenger Shawn Morse has been marked with accusations of private investigators and arrest records with character an issue. Andrew Beam, who covered the debate for the Troy Record says while issues were discussed so was the character of the candidates. He spoke with WAMC’s Brian Shields.
One result of this year’s redistricting process in New York is a new Senate district comprised of parts of the Capital Region and Hudson Valley. WAMC’s Ian Pickus spoke with Monica Arias Miranda, who is running in this month’s Democratic primary.
Miranda is running for the Democratic nomination for the new 46th Senate seat. There are three Democrats in the race vying for the right to face Republican Assemblyman George Amedore. A Costa Rican immigrant, Miranda is the founder of The Hispanic Coalition of New York.
The New York State Senate is expected to take action today to close a loophole in the state’s child porn laws. The bill was introduced just days after a recent court of appeals ruling which threw out a conviction against a former college professor who was found to have child porn on his work computer. The court ruled viewing the images did not constitute possession or procurement. The bill has been introduced in the state Senate by Republican Martin Golden of Brooklyn, who spoke with WAMC’s Brian Shields.
