A federal agency is proposing to designate hundreds of miles of rivers and other water bodies across the Northeast as critical habitats for an endangered species. The proposal includes a large portion of the Hudson River to protect a species beloved to local environmental organizations — the Atlantic sturgeon.

Federal meteorologists say the winter that has just ended was the hottest in U.S. records, due to the combination of El Nino and global warming.

Break out the sandals and shorts – it’s nearly 60 degrees outside.  Many folks are grabbing their irons and are out playing the links — which wouldn’t be so unusual if it wasn’t mid-December in northern New York and Vermont. But the winter sports industry is holding its breath. WAMC’s North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley takes a look at how the warm temperatures are affecting recreation habits.

For the past two days, our region has received a flurry of severe thunderstorm and even tornado warnings and watches. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there are 1,300 tornados in the United States on average each year. Summer is here, and with it the likelihood you'll hear WAMC broadcast a tornado watch or warning. Experts are urging people to take the warnings seriously.

Federal agencies have sent a letter to General Electric over concerns related to a recent Hudson River cleanup report. 

The Federal Hudson River Natural Resource Trustees recently sent a letter to General Electric to, as the group contends, address misinformation and correct the public record on a Hudson River Project Report submitted by the company to the New York State comptroller’s office in late December.

Hurricane Committee Retires "Sandy" From List of Names

MIAMI (AP) —Sandy is being retired from the list of tropical storm names because of the catastrophic damage its massive size and strength caused along the East Coast last year.

The Hudson River PCB-cleanup project is about halfway through, and both governmental officials as well as environmental advocates provided an update on the Superfund project Wednesday. What has not yet begun is a project to restore the Hudson River’s natural resources, including fish and wildlife, but planning for the restoration is underway.
