North Adams has the fifth-highest commercial tax rate of any Massachusetts municipality, according to the state Department of Revenue. The City Council on Tuesday approved a proposal to shift some of the fiscal burden from commercial taxpayers to residents. WAMC’s Berkshire Bureau Chief JD Allen spoke with Democratic Mayor Richard Alcombright, who crafted the plan.

North Adams – Massachusetts’ smallest city – has the highest rate of violent crime in state. That’s according to a recent report by the FBI analyzing cases of murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. North Adams Mayor Richard Alcombright, who has been the mayor of Massachusetts' smallest city since winning election in 2009, said Thursday he won't seek a fifth term this fall. Alcombright, citing the 25-year term of predecessor John Barrett, said the city has "missed an entire generation of leaders.  As we approach the third decade of this century, it is very clear to me that it is time for North Adams to move into its exciting future with new leadership and new energy."

Richard Alcombright is serving his fourth term as North Adams’ mayor and is two years removed from one of the biggest blows to the western Massachusetts city: the abrupt closure of North Adams Regional Hospital. The move put some 500 people out of work in the city of roughly 13,000.

It was a contentious election that reignited the divide between the contenders and their supporters. In part one of a two-part interview, WAMC’s Berkshire Bureau Chief Jim Levulis spoke with Alcombright about his top priorities for the next two years.

Former North Adams Mayor John Barrett III topped opponent and incumbent Mayor Richard Alcombright and challenger Eric Rudd. Barrett swept the city’s wards and officially entered his 15th campaign for mayor. The general election in November 3rd.

City officials say emergency service has been restored to the western Massachusetts town of North Adams approximately 11 hours after cell phone and Internet service was knocked out when radio towers on top of a nearby mountain collapsed amid high winds and heavy rain.
