The Northern Berkshire Community Coalition announced its direction for the next fiscal year at its annual meeting Friday in Williamstown. WAMC’s Berkshire Bureau Chief JD Allen spoke with Executive Director Amber Besaw about what the region needs right now – especially in terms of leadership after North Adams Mayor Richard Alcombright announced he will not seek a fifth term and the death of State Representative Gailanne Cariddi.

The Berkshire County District Attorney’s office and local schools will be teaming up to bring drug abuse and prevention classes to students as young as 9. It’s in response to an uptick in the number of children abusing drugs in the region.

The Northern Berkshire Community Coalition discussed transportation system needs in the region during an economic forum Friday in North Adams. The challenge is upgrading aging transportation infrastructure to accommodate the aging population.

Pittsfield’s youth violence and gang prevention coordinator is leaving his post to lead the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition. Adam Hinds was hired in March 2014 to oversee Pittsfield’s Shannon Grant. Since then he’s helped launch the Pittsfield Community Connection youth outreach program. Before returning to western Massachusetts, the Shelburne Falls native spent about 10 years with the United Nations handling conflict resolution in Iraq and Syria.

The executive director of the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition recently announced plans to step down at the end of June, nearly three decades after he created the organization. Al Bashevkin spoke with WAMC’s Berkshire Bureau Chief Jim Levulis about his time at the community group.

Community members held a forum in North Adams, Massachusetts this morning to talk about the region’s changing healthcare climate following the March 28th closure of North Adams Regional Hospital.

A community forum in western Massachusetts today focused on how drug addiction affects crime in the region.

The open forum, held at a monthly meeting of the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition in North Adams, was attended by about 85 Berkshire County housing advocates and area residents.

Though the discussion was largely focused on the need for increased affordable housing in the Northern Berkshires, the lack of available housing stock for low income families is an ongoing issue throughout the region.
