A leading environmental advocacy organization has released a report outlining measures the country could take to increase renewable energy generation and cut greenhouse gases 80 percent by 2050.

A report commissioned by two environmental groups shows that low-carbon options will be ready to replace the more than 2,000 megawatts of power lost by the closure of New York’s Indian Point nuclear power plant in four years. The report concludes compelling the state to adopt an energy efficiency framework would help.

A coalition of environmental groups Thursday filed a petition to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency asking General Electric to pursue additional PCB dredging in the Hudson River.

New York's highest court has ruled that the state's regulation of municipal stormwater discharges does not violate the federal Clean Water Act, as environmental groups claimed in a lawsuit.

The Court of Appeals split 4-to-3 in the decision Tuesday that upholds the Department of Environmental Conservation's general permit for municipal separate storm sewer systems.

The Natural Resources Defense Council and other groups contend the state's rules are too lax, allowing polluted runoff to pour unabated into rivers, lakes and coastal waters from hundreds of municipalities.

Arguing "it's now or never for the Hudson River and communities up and down its shores," activists gathered along the riverbank in Green Island today to urge General Electric to meet responsibilities beyond the current EPA-mandated PCB cleanup.

GE is slated to complete an EPA-ordered cleanup as early as this summer, one environmentalists say will leave behind millions of pounds of health-threatening PCB-contaminated sediments both north and south of the Federal Dam in Troy.
