Gun Buyback Program Yields More Than 300 Firearms

In New York, Orange County officials say more than 300 unwanted or illegal weapons were turned in during a recent gun buyback program.

GOSHEN – The 14 public school districts and BOCES in Orange County will now be eligible for a share of $1.2 million in county funds that have been set aside for school safety programs.

GOSHEN – Three years of funding totaling $1.2 million for public school safety and security in Orange County was approved Wednesday by the Ways and Means Committee of the county legislature.

They Have Their Eyes on Economic Development in Orange

The Orange County executive Thursday welcomed a new congressional member who represents the region. They say they agreed to work together to advance economic development in Orange County. Democratic Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney and Republican Orange County Executive Edward Diana agreed that investments in agriculture and local economic development projects are vital to creating jobs and moving Orange County forward.

The U.S. Justice Department says it will monitor primary elections in Orange County and Queens to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act of 1965.  WAMC's Dave Lucas reports...

Federal observers will be at polling places Tuesday in Orange County in the Hudson Valley based on a federal court order over concerns about the voting rights of Puerto Rican voters with limited English. Under the consent decree, bilingual ballots will be used countywide and the county will provide poll workers who speak both English and Spanish.
