The Thanksgiving holiday is traditionally the opening weekend for most major ski areas across the region.  Excitement peaked this week as multiple inches of natural snow fell, adding to the base of manmade snow already on the slopes.  Snowmaking operations can be crucial throughout the season. WAMC’s North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley was at Whiteface Mountain this week to see what it takes to keep the mountain white.

It's not even Halloween, but residents in New York's North Country were already digging out from the season's first major snowstorm on Thursday. WAMC's North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley spoke with Jon Lundin, Public Relations Coordinator the Olympic Regional Development Authority in Lake Placid.

Belleayre Music Festival Returns, With Changes

After a one-year absence, the Belleayre Music Festival will return this summer. The festival is set for the Belleayre Mountain Ski Center, in a new venue, and there are other changes on tap.

The not-for-profit Belleayre Music Festival suspended its event in 2015 after 23 summers. Operations Director Garrett Burris says it was difficult to fundraise after Hurricane Irene in 2011 and there were other factors.

Later this month, Lake Placid will be the site of an 11-hour, multi-performer bluegrass festival. It’s the first time that Lake Placid, which has hosted two Olympics, has showcased performers in that style of music.

The first snow of the season has fallen in the Adirondacks, where Whiteface Mountain has received a dusting.

The New York State comptroller has issued an audit strongly critical of the Olympic Regional Development Authority’s financial practices.

A state audit has found that the public entity operating former Olympic venues in Lake Placid continues to face significant cash flow problems and has had to borrow money to make payroll.

The head of the state-owned Belleayre Mountain Ski Center has been dismissed - that decision by the DEC leaves many questions...  Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Dave Lucas reports

An official with the state Department of Environmental Conservation says Tony Lanza was fired - and that's all they'll say. Lanza gone from his post he's held for more than a decade at the helm of the Bellayre Ski Center.

Tuesday's state budget deal calls for the Belleayre Mountain Ski Center to be taken over by the Olympic Regional Development Authority, which also operates New York’s Gore Mountain and Whiteface ski areas.

Officials note the shift entails maintaining Belleayre's status as a year-round tourist destination.
