Following weeks of intense debate, Vermont’s governor has signed controversial legislation that will prevent parents from opting their children out of vaccinations philosophical reasons.

Vermont Health Commissioner Dr. Harry Chen spent the week speaking forcefully in favor of eliminating the philosophical exemption that some parents use to avoid getting their kids fully vaccinated. As has been the case around the country, the issue was the subject of fierce debate in Montpelier this week. Commissioner Chen spoke with WAMC’s North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley.


The chairman of the Health Care Committee in the Vermont House says a majority of the panel supports eliminating the philosophical exemption for parents who don't want to have their children vaccinated.

The Vermont Senate has voted to end the philosophical exemption some parents use to decline to have their children vaccinated. The Legislation would require the full range of required vaccinations as a pre-condition to enrolling in school.

Vermont is embroiled in a debate over ending the philosophical exemption that allows parents to have their kids skip childhood immunizations required for attending school.  WAMC's Tristan O'Neill reports...

The state Senate voted 25-4 recently to end the exemption, while the House has voted 93-36 to preserve it.

Vermont is among the highest states in the number of parents who exempt their children from immunizations. State health officials say Vermont had 102 pertussis cases between January and the first week of April, more than were reported in the state all last year.
