A new paper issued by the New York Public Interest Research Group says the number of doctors in the state has increased. The findings counter recent research showing the opposite.

The report, titled “The Doctor Is In: New York’s Increasing Number of Doctors,” purports to "debunk the myth" that New York is seeing a loss in the number of its doctors.

A collaboration between healthcare providers in the Berkshires will help expand surgical services in the northern portion of the region. 

Thursday in North Adams, Northern Berkshire Healthcare announced a new partnership with Pittsfield-based Berkshire Surgical Associates that will bring two general surgeons to North Adams Regional Hospital.

Timothy Jones, president and CEO of Northern Berkshire Healthcare, said that the additional surgical staff made available through the collaboration will help the North Adams Regional Hospital treat patients closer to home.

A community discussion was held Friday to address the number primary care medical providers available in the Berkshires, and how to attract more to the area.

A recent report released by the Massachusetts Medical Society highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the physician workforce in the Commonwealth, which includes a lack of trained specialists and primary care physicians.

The Massachusetts Medical Society’s annual Physician Workforce Study takes a comprehensive look at the working doctors in the state, physician recruitment rates, profession satisfaction, and more. One of the key observations in the report is a lack of primary care doctors and specialists across Massachusetts.
