The Plattsburgh North Country Chamber of Commerce held its annual Business Expo Thursday in Plattsburgh. WAMC’s North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley checked in with some exhibitors on their perspectives regarding the economy.

New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik received an award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce today before a business-friendly crowd gathered in Plattsburgh.

The Plattsburgh North Country Chamber of Commerce has analyzed the volume of traffic traversing the U.S.-Canada border at Champlain to determine whether the exchange rate is having an impact on people traveling south.

The Plattsburgh North Country Chamber of Commerce held its annual legislative breakfast this morning.  The overriding issue capturing businesses’ attention is the governor’s proposal to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour.

A  55-million dollar expansion and renovation at the Plattsburgh International Airport  will  more than triple the size of the existing terminal.  Airport officials today gave tours to community officials and the media, showing the progress of the expansion, which is now in Phase Two.

The Plattsburgh North Country Chamber of Commerce has created a new initiative to enhance the region’s growing transportation equipment manufacturing sector.  Part of the effort included a recent tour of the facilities in Plattsburgh by Canadian transportation company officials.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo took a delegation of about 20 people from different economic sectors on a trade mission to Cuba this week. Among them was Plattsburgh North Country Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Garry Douglas. He tells WAMC’s North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley his focus was aviation and potential opportunities to open travel between the Plattsburgh International Airport and the island nation.

The Plattsburgh North Country Chamber of Commerce played host to a visit by the ‘Consul General of Canada in New York’ on Monday.  The consular officer toured several Canadian business operations, including Nova Bus, Bombardier and the Champlain Port of Entry. The looming automatic federal budget cuts - or sequestration - will trickle down to all parts of the economy.  During a meeting on business confidence, northern New York officials predicted serious consequences for some economic sectors in the region.  They are also disappointed that Congress can’t, or won’t, work to find the 2-percent cuts in the federal budget.

The Plattsburgh North Country Chamber of Commerce released the results of its annual Business Confidence Survey this morning.  While the region’s businesses maintained a high confidence level, the index has dropped a point over last year.
