Hudson Valley heightens security after bombings

GOSHEN – Law enforcement across the Hudson Valley has heightened security in the wake of the Boston bombings that left three people dead and over 170 people injured on Monday. The attacks at the Boston Marathon were acts of terrorism, President Obama said Tuesday.

Orange County Sheriff Carl DuBois said law enforcement is concentrating on areas where large numbers of people gather.

Obama warns GOP against blocking gun bill

President Barack Obama is warning Republican lawmakers against using delay tactics to sink gun control legislation.

Obama spoke last night about his gun proposals in Connecticut, where 20 children and 6 adults were killed in a horrific school shooting last year. The shooting spurred fresh debate in Washington over gun control measures.

The president is singling out GOP lawmakers who want to use procedural maneuvers to block legislation. Obama says the move would be akin to saying the public's opinion doesn't matter.

Maloney asks White House to limit furlough impact

WASHINGTON – Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney (D, Cold Spring) asked President Obama and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel to reduce the impact of sequestration on civilian employees.

The lawmaker’s request came in a letter to both officials in support of legislation to give more flexibility to the Pentagon on sequestration cuts and to shift more than $10 billion into Pentagon operations and maintenance accounts.

Economists were opposed to automatic spending cuts

Most business economists opposed the automatic spending cuts that took effect Friday night amid the gridlock between President Obama and Congress.

But they overwhelmingly support efforts to reduce the deficit over the next 10 years.

That's according to a survey released Monday of 196 members of the National Association for Business Economics.

The survey, done from Jan. 21 to Feb. 13, gave some support to both sides in the U.S. government budget debate.
