Warren: Bill Would Bar Credit Checks By Employers

Massachusetts U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren is introducing legislation that would ban what she calls the widespread use of personal credit history by employers looking to hire workers.

Warren said the practice unfairly targets women, minorities, seniors, students and others with fewer resources to bounce back financially after a personal setback like an illness or divorce.

Those low credit ratings can follow an individual for years.

Warren told reporters there's little evidence of any correlation between a poor credit rating and job performance.

Senators Urge Congress To Add Funds For Federal Railroad Safety

WASHINGTON – In the wake of the December 1 Metro-North derailment that killed four people and injured over 60 others, two US senators have asked Congress to increase funding to the Federal Railroad Administration for added inspections.

Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) have asked for an increase of $15 million over this year’s sequestered budget, bringing the total in the Obama administration’s request to $185 million for safety and operations.

The additional money would fund 45 more inspectors.

Senators: Put Cameras On Train Tracks, Engineers

After a New York commuter train derailment killed four people, two federal lawmakers want trains to be outfitted with cameras pointed at engineers and at the tracks.

Sens. Charles Schumer of New York and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut held a news conference Sunday at Grand Central Terminal, one week after the derailment in the Bronx. The Democratic lawmakers are urging the Federal Railroad Administration to implement the cameras.

The National Transportation Safety Board has suggested it.

Blumenthal: Beware Black Friday 'Tricks And Traps'

Connecticut U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal is warning of the "tricks and traps" some advertisers use to try to lure consumers into making purchases on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The Connecticut Democrat has scheduled a Friday morning news conference at his Hartford office to highlight what he calls laughable, ludicrous and deceptive ads that consumers should be on the lookout for as the holiday shopping season begins.

Blumenthal: Newtown reference may spur gun changes

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal says President Barack Obama's reference in his inauguration speech to the murders of 20 children and six educators in Newtown could spur changes in federal gun law.

Blumenthal told The Associated Press on Monday that the image and symbol of the Dec. 14 shooting deaths in the president's speech will be a "motivating force" to pass new laws.
