UAlbany Set To Announce Ford Successor

The University at Albany football team has a new coach. Maryland's assistant head coach Greg Gattuso, and former Duquesne head coach, will take over for Bob Ford. He’s expected to be introduced at a 3:30 p.m. news conference this afternoon. Gattuso got a five-year contract with a $230,000 annual base salary.

In the NFL, Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes in the final 61 seconds, helping the New England Patriots rally for a 27-26 victory over the Cleveland Browns yesterday. New England lost tight end Rob Gronkowski to a leg injury in the third quarter.

Elsewhere, Geno Smith threw a touchdown pass and ran for another score as the New York Jets set a season high for points in a 37-27 win over Oakland.

Cardinals Eliminate Pirates 6-1, Face Dodgers Next

The St. Louis Cardinals will host the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first two games of the National League Championship Series.

The Cardinals advanced for the third straight year by taking Game 5 of the division series, using a pair of two-run homers and outstanding pitching to defeat the Pirates 6-1. The Redbirds went ahead to stay on a two-run homer by David Freese in the second inning, his seventh career postseason round-tripper. Matt Adams added a two-run blast late in the game to cap the scoring.

Rays Blank Cleveland 4-0, Face Boston Tomorrow

In baseball, Tampa Bay is 2-for-2 in elimination playoff games. After beating Texas to get to the American League wild card matchup, the Rays got a great pitching performance from Alex Cobb and blanked Cleveland 4-0 to reach the AL division series against Boston on Friday.

The Indians, who haven't won a World Series since 1948, were making their first postseason appearance since 2007. They won 10 straight games at the end of the season to reach the wild card elimination game.

The Jets and the Patriots opened up week 2 of the NFL season Thursday night. Tom Brady threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Dobson on the game's first series and the Pats held off the Jets 13-10 despite managing just nine first downs and 234 yards total offense.

The Pats played without wide receiver Danny Amendola and tight end Rob Gronkowski, who missed the game because of injuries.  Jets rookie QB Geno Smith threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter. New England is now 2-0 on the season.

In college football action, Texas Tech beat No. 24 TCU 20-10.

Red Sox Sweep Chicago After 7-6 win

In baseball, David Ortiz had two hits and three RBIs to help power the Red Sox past Chicago 7-6 yesterday and complete a three-game sweep. Stephen Drew added a solo homer for the AL East-leading Red Sox, who won for the seventh time in eight games.

The San Antonio Spurs just couldn't put away the Miami Heat.

The Heat managed to force a seventh game Thursday night in the NBA Finals by scoring the last six points to beat San Antonio 103-100 in overtime. LeBron James and Ray Allen each hit three-pointers in the last 21 seconds of the fourth quarter after the Spurs failed to come up with rebounds of missed Miami shots.

In other NBA news, the proposed deal between the Celtics and Clippers that would have sent Doc Rivers and Kevin Garnett to Los Angeles is off.

Mets Win 9-4 Over Yankees In Subway Series

In the major leagues, Infielders Ike Davis and Ruben Tejada sparked a five-run first inning that kept the Mets sailing along in this Subway Series with a 9-4 victory over the Yankees on Wednesday night.

Kevin Durant is among a group of sports stars and coaches who are expressing concern for the victims, posting on his Twitter account that he was praying for everyone involved.
