Conn. Delegation To Speak On Newtown Anniversary

Members of Connecticut's congressional delegation are commemorating the upcoming six-month anniversary of the school shooting in Newtown with speeches on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Reps. Elizabeth Esty, Rosa DeLauro, John Larson, Joe Courtney and Jim Himes, all Democrats, are scheduled to address their colleagues this morning.

They are expected to renew their call for federal action on enhanced background checks for gun purchases, a proposal that failed to receive enough support in the Senate back in April despite public support.

Report: Conn. town's schools seeks security boost

WVIT-TV, an NBC affiliate, reported that school security was a chief topic at Thursday's Board of Education meeting. The board voted to ask the town to include in next year's budget one additional full-time police officer for each of the four elementary schools.

Board members plan to meet with state and federal officials Friday to discuss funding for security.

DiNapoli explains frozen gun investments in pension fund

Just two days after New York legislators passed first-in-the-nation gun law reforms in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, the state’s chief financial officer says pension fund investments in firearm companies have been frozen. Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli spoke on WAMC’s Capitol Connection program.

New School-Safety Committee Seeks Public Comment

Vote set to name Conn. school for slain teacher

STRATFORD, Conn. (AP) — A proposal to name a school after a teacher killed in the Newtown, Conn., school shootings is set to go before a town council.

Stratford Mayor John Harkins is recommending naming a new elementary school named after Victoria Soto, a 27-year-old Stratford resident who died trying to shield her students from the gunman inside Sandy Hook Elementary School. The shooter killed 20 children and six women at the school on Dec. 14 before committing suicide.

High School Students Hold Vigil For Sandy Hook Shooting Victims

Many observances are taking place today to mark one week since the school shooting in Newtown Connecticut.  A student initiated vigil was held at a high school in Springfield Massachusetts. WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill reports.

Hundreds of students, faculty and staff filled the auditorium Friday morning at Springfield’s High School of Commerce to remember fellow students, friends and colleagues who were killed by a gunman at the Sandy Hook School.   The vigil included a song, and  several student authored poems read aloud by their teachers
