Public safety officials took part in a statewide emergency preparedness drill today in Holyoke Massachusetts. It involved an unfortunately all too familiar scenario—a lone gunman on a shooting spree.
The drill, involving a gunman on the campus of Holyoke Community College was a test of the coordinated response of local, campus and state police along with fire and emergency medical personnel. It was also a trial run for some new technology according to Holyoke Fire Lt Tom Paquin, who was the public information officer for the exercise.
New York and Connecticut have already enacted new gun laws in the wake of December’s Newtown school shooting. The Massachusetts legislature is expected to take up a bill before the end of the 2013 legislative session.
The point person for gun issues in the Massachusetts House says he hopes to recommend a comprehensive bill by September. Democratic State Representative Harold Naughton of Clinton , who co-chairs the Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security said the goal is to update the state’s already strict gun ownership laws.
A ten member special committee has been formed in Springfield Massachusetts to investigate school safety. The committee has a broad and open- ended assignment.
Springfield City Council President James Ferrera, who named the members of the Special Committee on School Safety on Monday, said he expects the panel will delve deeply into the subject and issue periodic reports and recommendations.
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The legislature's task force on gun violence and school safety is continuing its round of hearings on possible law and policy changes in response to the deadly Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown.
TAFT, Calif. (AP) -- A 16-year-old student armed with a shotgun walked into class in a rural California high school on Thursday and shot one student, fired at another but missed, and then was talked into surrendering by a teacher and another staff member, officials said.
The teen victim was in critical but stable condition, Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood told a press conference. The sheriff said the teacher suffered a minor pellet wound to the head but declined treatment.
Friday’s mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, is on record as the second deadliest mass shooting in the nation’s history. 26 lives were taken; the majority of them children aged 6 and 7.
The shooting has renewed the debate on the role of guns in American society, with politicians and advocacy groups again at odds over whether new restrictions should be put on how guns are bought and what types of guns should be made available.
