A federal regulator has turned down a request from the parent of the Indian Point nuclear power plant concerning the level of earthquake risk.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has finalized its screening and prioritization for seismic hazard reviews for U.S. nuclear power plants. This comes after Entergy Nuclear had argued that its Indian Point 3 reactor should be moved from Group 1, the highest priority when it comes to examining earthquake risk, to Group 2 or 3. Jerry Nappi is spokesman for Entergy.

Scientists say a small earthquake was recorded Saturday morning in Putnam County, just a few miles north of the Westchester County border. A local newspaper, The Journal News, reported that area residents did not hear or feel anything. Those near the epicenter however, were startled out of their homes.

The parent of the Indian Point nuclear power plant has submitted a report to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, saying that the earthquake risk for one of its reactors is not nearly as great as initially estimated.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission Spokesman Neil Sheehan says the NRC had already been looking into seismic risk, but that the topic took on greater urgency following the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan.
