Springfield Votes On MGM's Casino Project

Voters in Springfield, Massachusetts go to the polls today for a referendum on MGM Resorts’ proposal to build an $800 million resort casino in the city’s downtown.  State law gives local voters the right to weigh in before a developer can even apply for a casino license.

Former Massachusetts Attorney General Encourages Casino Opponents

    Scott Harshbarger, the former Massachusetts Attorney General and former president of Common Cause was  the featured speaker at an anti-casino forum in Springfield.  The event, sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts attracted about 300 people to Christ Church Cathedral.  A citywide voter referendum on MGM Resort’s Springfield casino development is on July 16th.    WAMC”s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Harshbarger

Casino Opponents To Speak In Springfield

A group working to defeat next month’s casino referendum in Springfield Massachusetts is holding a campaign kickoff event this Wednesday.  One of the scheduled speakers is Robert Steele. He is a former Congressman from Connecticut who witnessed the growth of casino gambling in Connecticut in the 1990s. He is the author of the novel, The Curse: Big-time Gambling’s Seduction of a Small New England Town.

Springfield Budget Bets On Casino Development

The proposed budget for the coming fiscal year in Springfield Massachusetts is balanced with the help of $5 million from casino developer MGM.  The money was included in the budget presented by the city’s mayor even though a  Springfield casino is not guaranteed.  Casino opponents are crying foul.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno describes his proposed $571.8 million budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1st as a “ hold the line” budget.

Springfield City Council Approves MGM Casino Deal

The casino project proposed in downtown Springfield Massachusetts by MGM Resorts International has cleared another hurdle. The city council unanimously endorsed the project Friday night and authorized a city wide voter referendum.

   The vote by the Springfield City Council came after about 90 minutes of debate during a special meeting Friday night and was greeted by cheers in the packed council chambers.
