New Superintendent Chosen For Springfield MA Public Schools

Daniel Warwick,chosen to be the new Springfield superintendent of schools

The second largest public school district in Massachusetts will have a new  superintendent of schools by July 1st.  WAMC’s Paul Tuthill reports.

            Daniel Warwick, who began his career in education as a teacher in the public schools in Springfield Mass in 1976, and is currently deputy superintendent, has been picked to be the troubled school systems next chief administrator.

Springfield YMCA Marks Milestone

The YMCA of greater Springfield Massachusetts is marking its 160th anniversary. It is the second oldest “Y” in the United States and the 4th oldest in the world.  WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Kirk Smith, the president and C-E-O of the Springfield “Y” about programs planned for the summer and an upcoming anniversary gala.

Springfield Budget Review Begins

            With just two weeks until the new fiscal year, the City Council in Springfield Massachusetts will start holding hearings on a proposed budget that cuts municipal services while calling for higher fees and taxes.  WAMC”s Paul Tuthill reports.

            Springfield City Councilor Timothy Rooke, who chairs the finance committee, says the administration has not squeezed enough savings from city government.

Springfield Budget Calls For Job Cuts, Library Closings,Higher Fees

  The city of Springfield Massachusetts will reduce its municipal
workforce and cut some city services under a budget recommended by the
mayor. At the same time, the city council is being asked to raise almost
$3 million in fees and taxes to avoid even deeper cuts. WAMC's Pioneer

Neighborhood Transformation Project Seen As National Model

Mayor's Budget Expected To Result In Layoffs, Cutbacks

first increase in local aid in four years. But, it appears it won't be
enough to avert layoffs and service cuts in the state's third largest
