Conference Highlights Crime Prevention Strategy

Law enforcement officials and community leaders from the greater Springfield Massachusetts area met Monday to consider ways to deter crime.  WAMC”s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill reports

 

      Hampden County District Attorney Mark Mastroianni  believes a policing model that employs strong community partnerships and focused deterrence can be a successful strategy  to reduce violence in high crime areas of Springfield and Holyoke.

Springfield Group to Release Tornado Rebuild Plan

Springfield officials say they've finished designing a plan to rebuild the city after tornado touchdowns that wreaked havoc last June.  WAMC’s Tristan O’Neill reports…

They'll release details of the rebuilding plan in a 3 p.m. meeting today at Springfield City Hall.

Plan manager Kevin Sweeney says the initiative was based in part on input from 3,000 residents.

It combines rebuilding with economic development ideas.

Sweeney says they'd "like to see Springfield not just where it was on the day of the tornado, but in a better place."

City Seeks Money To Replace School Wrecked By Tornado

Officials in Springfield Massachusetts announced Friday they intend to seek state and federal funding to build a new school to replace an aged  one that was heavily damaged by the tornado almost a year ago. WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill reports.

Public Safety Initiatives Target Illegal Guns

A series of proposals aimed at cracking down on crime are pending before the city council in western Massachusetts' largest city. Several of the public safety initiatives proposed in Springfield are intended to reduce illegal guns, and are being considered in the aftermath of recent horrific gun violence. Needs Assessment Of People Affected By Tornado Underway

   Experienced disaster response volunteers are canvassing the tornado devastated neighborhoods of Springfield Massachusetts to conduct a needs assessment.  Local organizations will use the  collected information to help people still struggling to recover from the storm.   WAMC”s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill reports.

Museum Preserves Personal Stories Of The Titanic Disaster

Events to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic are scheduled for later this week by the Titanic Historical Society.  The oldest and largest organization in the world devoted to preserving the history of the doomed luxury liner is headquartered in Springfield Massachusetts.  WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau  Chief Paul Tuthill reports.
