Sunshine Week


Sunday marks the beginning of “Sunshine Week,” a week in which the nation focuses its attention on government openness.  The “Week” makes it clear that it is important to maintain an open government, in order to ensure the proper relationship between public officials and the citizens they are pledged to serve.

Three newspapers in Connecticut sent reporters to all police departments in the state and found that some of them refused to release documents they're required to disclose under Connecticut's Freedom of Information Act.

Governor Cuomo made a big show last week of marking Sunshine Week - a national initiative launched in 2005 by the American Society of News Editors to highlight the importance of open government and the dangers of excessive and unnecessary secrecy.
