New York health inspectors report finding safety violations in 70 percent of the tanning devices examined recently in three upstate counties.

The American Cancer Society and other health groups are pressing for a law in New York State that would ban anyone under the age of 18 from using a tanning salon. They argue the growing risk of cancer to young people is too great a threat to ignore.  Capitol Correspondent Karen DeWitt reports…

Supporters of the law cite statistics that show all forms of skin cancer, and particularly melanoma, which can sometimes result in death, are on the rise among young people.

Vermont's governor has allowed a ban on the use of tanning beds by young people to become law without his signature.  WAMC’s North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley reports… 

Governor Peter Shumlin said Wednesday that he did not approve of the legislation because of concerns about how it would be enforced.

Owners of establishments with tanning beds caught allowing people younger than 18 to use them would face fines.
