Napoli's 11th Inning Homer Help Sox Take Yankees 8-7

In baseball news, Mike Napoli homered with two outs in the 11th inning — his second of the game — and the Red Sox beat the Yankees 8-7 on Sunday night.

Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez won’t be ready to rejoin the team any time soon. The team said in a statement that Rodriguez has a Grade 1 strain of his left quadriceps muscle.

Elsewhere in the American League, Tampa Bay beat Toronto 4-3. Cleveland topped Minnesota 7-1. Detroit slid by Kansas City 4-1. Seattle cruised ahead of Houston 12-5. Oakland shut out the Angels 6-0 and Baltimore doubled up Texas 4-2.

For Rivera, An Emotional Last All-Star Game

American League pitchers shut down the best of the National League and blanked the Senior Circuit 3-0 to win baseball's annual midsummer classic, the All-Star Game.

The emotional highlight was 43-year-old New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, the all-time leader with 638 career saves. Rivera, who is retiring at the end of the season, received a 90-second standing ovation from fans, teammates and opposing players when he entered the game. Rivera pitched a perfect eighth. He was named MVP.

Cespedes Wins Home Run Derby

In baseball news, Yoenis Cespedes of the Oakland Athletics won the Home Run Derby. He edged Washington's 20-year-old Bryce Harper 9-8 in the final round of the eight-player competition.

In tonight’s All-Star game, the Mets' Matt Harvey will be the starting pitcher for the National League and Detroit's Max Scherzer for the American League. Harvey becomes the first pitcher from the host team to start an All-Star game since Houston's Roger Clemens in 2004 and just the 11th overall.

Crisp Hits Leadoff Infield Single, Athletics Beat Sox 3-2

In baseball news, the Athletics beat Boston 3-2 despite a stellar start by Red Sox rookie Brandon Workman. Workman took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning of his first major league start. Coco Crisp broke it up with a leadoff infield single.

Aaron Hicks had a three-run homer to help Minnesota top the Yankees 10-4. The Twins beat CC Sabathia for the first time in six years to take two of three from the Yankees.

And the Mets doubled up Pittsburgh 4-2. John Buck's two-run single highlighted a three-run first inning for New York.

Concerns And Celebration Over Derek Jeter's Return

In baseball news, Derek Jeter was back, and the Yankees felt a lot better.

The Yankees captain singled on his first pitch of the season, scored a run and went 1 for 4 with an RBI groundout in his return from a nine-month layoff to help New York beat Kansas City 8-4 Thursday. He left for a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning.

Daniel Nava hit a two-out single in the top of the 10th inning to score pinch-runner Jackie Bradley Jr., and the Boston Red Sox rallied from a four-run deficit for the second time in a four-game series to beat the Mariners 8-7 in 10 innings.

Ortiz Passes Baines For Hits By DH In Boston's 11-4 Win

In baseball news, Boston's David Ortiz has passed Harold Baines to become Major League Baseball's career leader in hits by a designated hitter. Ortiz collected his 1,689th hit in his first at-bat and also homered in the Red Sox' 11-4 rout of Seattle.

The Yankees ended their three-game slide. Robinson Cano hit a three-run homer, Lyle Overbay added a grand slam and the Yankees snapped out of their offensive funk with an 8-1 victory over the Royals. Fox Sports is reporting Derek Jeter will make his season debut today with the Yankees as they host Kansas City.

Investigation Looking More Grim For Hernandez

Documents show a man linked to the murder case against former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez told police Hernandez admitted firing the fatal shots. Carlos Ortiz reportedly told investigators that Ernest Wallace said Hernandez admitted shooting Odin Lloyd in an industrial park near Hernandez's home.

Checking baseball scores, the Red Sox snapped a three-game losing streak winning 11-8 over the Mariners last night. Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a tiebreaking homer and Shane Victorino slugged the last of Boston's five long balls to help with the win.

Keith Strudler: Lance Armstrong On What It Takes To Win

A few years ago, the athletic shoe company Adidas had this ad slogan that went, “Impossible is nothing.” It always seemed to be worn by people who I doubt adhered to that ethic, but certainly held their favorite athletes to that standard. More to the point, the slogan itself doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. For example, I have stared at a 10 foot basketball hoop since I was about five, all with the hope that I might someday grab it on the way down from a windmill dunk. That never happened. The closest I ever got was when we played on seven foot rims at the elementary school.

Chris Davis Homers And Baltimore Beats Yanks 4-2

Chris Davis is at it again.

Davis set a franchise record hitting his 31st home run before the All-Star break, helping Baltimore beat the Yankees 4-2 Sunday night for a three-game sweep. The Yankees have now lost five straight games.

Elsewhere on the scoreboard, the Red Sox beat the Blue Jays 5-4. Boston won for the fifth time in six games and improved to an American League-best 50-34. Washington crushed the Mets 13-2.
