Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker on Friday signed into law a bill allowing transgender people to use restrooms and locker rooms that correspond with their gender identities. Massachusetts becomes the first state this year to enact such a transgender rights bill.

A new regulation protecting transgender New Yorkers from discrimination is taking effect.

Advocates are expected to make a new push in the next few weeks for a vote in the Massachusetts Legislature to expand legal protections for transgender individuals.  The coalition supporting the measure is expanding.

The visibility of issues facing the transgender community is at an all time high. 

In October, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo enacted an executive order to include gender identity under the definition of sex in the 1945 Human Rights Act which will start providing employment and housing protections to transgender individuals. New York will be the 19th state to provide such protections to the Trans Community.

Gay rights activists Wednesday launched the fifth annual Springfield Pride Week with a call to expand legal protections in Massachusetts for transgender people.

The rainbow unity flag was raised on the Springfield City Hall esplanade and the mayor read a proclamation in front of about 50 people to publicize Pride Week.  It is a volunteer run series of events that include dances, parties, performances, and a church service.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has sent a letter to Acting State Education Commissioner Dr. Elisabeth Berlin regarding the Department’s reported failure to protect transgender and gender non-conforming students from harassment and violence.

In his letter, Cuomo demands that the State Education Department take immediate steps to address failures as outlined by a recent report from the New York Civil Liberties Union.

New York's attorney general has started a program to ensure transgender individuals have equal access to health care.

Eric Schneiderman's office announced the initiative Friday.

Staffers with the attorney general's Civil Rights Bureau will conduct training sessions at hospitals and medical centers around the state to discuss the best ways to ensure the rights of transgender patients are respected.

The reason cited: too many transgender Americans report being harassed or denied care because of their gender identity.

A Capital Region school district has approved a new bathroom policy to accommodate transgendered students. The plan has energized supporters and opponents.

Members of the transgender community of the Capital Region, their advocates, and allies will gather in Albany tonight to honor the memory of the many transgender people who have been victims of violence in the past year.

Today is the 16th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, a solemn tribute to people who have lost their lives to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event also raises awareness of the threat of discrimination and violence faced by the transgender community.

Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley has implemented a formal policy regarding the admission of transgender students. 

During the college's annual Convocation address on Tuesday, President Lynn Pasquerella announced that the all-women's  institution  now welcomes applications from transgender students who identify as female.

New York's governor says transgender people should be protected from discrimination and says that if elected to a second term he'll push to include gender identity and expression in the state's civil rights law.

In a letter to the Empire State Pride Agenda, Cuomo notes that transgender people face significant discrimination and that the state should outlaw discrimination against them when it comes to things like housing, employment and public accommodations.

The state already prohibits discrimination based on race, religion, disability and gender.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A New England gay rights organization is praising Connecticut's Department of Insurance for informing insurers they must pay "covered expenses" for treatment related to a patient's gender transition.

Stockholders of Texas-based oil giant ExxonMobil are set to vote Wednesday on a proposed company policy to ban discrimination against gay or transgender workers, a resolution pushed by New York Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

The comptroller's office says it has used the influence it has from investing the $150 billion state pension fund's stock portfolio to help persuade 27 other big corporations to adopt new anti-discrimination policies. Previous attempts with ExxonMobil have failed.
