#TransLivesMatter: Locals Observe Transgender Day of Remembrance 2014

Members of the transgender community of the Capital Region, their advocates, and allies will gather in Albany tonight to honor the memory of the many transgender people who have been victims of violence in the past year.

Today is the 16th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, a solemn tribute to people who have lost their lives to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event also raises awareness of the threat of discrimination and violence faced by the transgender community.

March And Program To Decry Violence Against Transgender Community

Mount Holyoke Opens Admissions To Transgender Students

Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley has implemented a formal policy regarding the admission of transgender students. 

During the college's annual Convocation address on Tuesday, President Lynn Pasquerella announced that the all-women's  institution  now welcomes applications from transgender students who identify as female.

Cuomo: Outlaw Gender Identity Discrimination

New York's governor says transgender people should be protected from discrimination and says that if elected to a second term he'll push to include gender identity and expression in the state's civil rights law.

In a letter to the Empire State Pride Agenda, Cuomo notes that transgender people face significant discrimination and that the state should outlaw discrimination against them when it comes to things like housing, employment and public accommodations.

The state already prohibits discrimination based on race, religion, disability and gender.

NY Comptroller Pushes Transgender Corporate Rights

Stockholders of Texas-based oil giant ExxonMobil are set to vote Wednesday on a proposed company policy to ban discrimination against gay or transgender workers, a resolution pushed by New York Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

The comptroller's office says it has used the influence it has from investing the $150 billion state pension fund's stock portfolio to help persuade 27 other big corporations to adopt new anti-discrimination policies. Previous attempts with ExxonMobil have failed.
