A few hundred mourners attended Wednesday’s funeral mass in Saugerties for former New York Congressman Maurice Hinchey. Hinchey, who had suffered from a rare neurological disorder, died a week ago at age 79.

HV County Execs Chime In On Shared Services Plans

County leaders in New York were required by the state to present their shared services plans to residents by October 15. The plan is Governor Andrew Cuomo’s initiative to reduce property taxes by requiring counties to work with local governments to find savings by coordinating and eliminating overlapping services. WAMC’s Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne checked in with a few county executives in the Hudson Valley on their plans.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo delivered the third of his six regional State of the State addresses today in the Hudson Valley. One of his proposals got positive feedback while another is facing some criticism, as he predicted.

Ulster County is taking a step to address sexual assault on college campuses with funding under New York’s “Enough is Enough” policy. The funding is being used for a crisis counselor who will work on two campuses.

A number of elected officials will gather Wednesday afternoon in Ulster County, New York for the opening of a transitional home for veterans.

Albany County Executive Dan McCoy and Ulster County Executive Mike Hein have weighed in on the race for New York State Attorney General.

While McCoy and Hein's endorsements Thursday of a fellow Democrat came as no surprise, a Siena College poll released in April found that 53 percent had no opinion of sitting first-term Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, leaving the door open to a challenge.

A number of business, labor, and elected officials joined together in Ulster County this afternoon to urge New Yorkers to vote in support of casino gambling in the state. A few opponents voiced their concerns as well.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has announced an agreement with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection to reduce the impact of discharges into an Ulster County water body. The consent order awaits the signature of a New York City official before going into effect.

The first arts awards for Ulster County are being handed out Tuesday in Kingston. And the organization behind the awards is about to change its name to reflect its reach.

The Dutchess County Arts Council has been working with Ulster County for years, and will soon change its name to better reflect that work. Linda Marston-Reid is president of the Dutchess County Arts Council. She says the name has been a barrier to having communities understand who the council serves.
