Uncle Sam

You might know that Uncle Sam, the personification of the United States, is based on a real person. Samuel Wilson, a meatpacker who lived in Troy, New York from the late 1700s until his death in 1854, is said to be the original Uncle — but even that is up for debate. Either way, a group of Trojans this weekend is hoping to bid on what could be the only known photograph of Wilson.

TROY, N.Y. (AP) — Uncle Sam statues will begin popping up this spring in the upstate New York city that lays claim to being the birthplace of the iconic symbol for the United States.

Thirty white fiberglass statues depicting a man with a goatee and wearing a tall hat were delivered last week to downtown Troy. Artists will decorate the life-sized statues, which will be installed on Troy streets in April.
